Explanation |
Granulated blast furnace slag is the material that is formed by the rapid cooling of the slag, which is formed as a by-product during the extraction of cast iron in the blast furnace, and that exhibits pozzolanic properties and hydraulic binding when ground and turned into fine particles. The very rapid cooling of the molten slag gives the slag both a granular and amorphous (glassy) structure. Blast furnace slag as a result of very rapid cooling process is called “granulated blast furnace slag”. |
Usage areas |
Granulated blast furnace slag is basically used in three ways: it can be used as a binder by combining with lime in an aqueous medium, it can be used in the production of slag cement by grinding together with clinker and gypsum, and it can be added to the concrete later and used as an additive material.
